Solar Energy - Niyazi Serdar Sariciftci on nanostructures for solar energy
Increasing conversion efficiencies and the ability to store and transport energy are two of the goals of organic and hybrid solar cell development. Niyazi Serdar Sariciftci is Ordinarius Professor for Physical Chemistry and the Founding Director of the Linz Institute of Organic Solar Cells (LIOS) at the Johannes Kepler University of Linz (Austria). Research at LIOS includes work on plastic solar cells, photophysics of conjugated polymers, and organic field-effect transistors. In this video, he talks about organic nanostructures and inorganic-organic hybrid nanostructures for solar energy conversion, and the potential for converting solar energy into chemical energy for artifical fuels. Sariciftci's major contributions are in the fields of photoinduced optical, magnetic-resonance and transport phenomena in semiconducting and metallic polymers. He is the inventor of conjugated polymer and fullerene-based solar cells. He has over 400 publications, including five books. He also initiated seven spinoff companies for organic optoelectronics. He is the recipient of the National Science Prize of Turkey (2006) and the Austria Prize for Research (2008). He is a Fellow of SPIE and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
